We love to enjoy the stereotypical tourist trails featuring canals, tulips, windmills and clogs, but also love straying of the beaten track (in fact when holidaying anywhere I normally Google search "quirky things to do in <insert city name>" in search of the funkadelic) and finding ourselves in eccentric millionaire's cat museums. True story.
And the food, of course the food. We travelled all over the world in Amsterdam, trying everything from Surinam and Indonesian cuisine, to double salted liquorice and breakfast apple pie. I love the Dutch.
We also found a wee Kiwi cafe for a much hyped brunch (only to have to wait nearly an hour for our food) and a rather good coffee. Best leave that one off the list - unless of course you have a spare hour or two to sit in the cold wind. *Ahem*. It may possibly only happen on the weekends, who knows.
We spent time admiring the Museumplein, adored the rejkmuseum from afar, rambled the Van Gogh museum from top to bottom, then ate Lolly Cake in beautiful square that connects these establishments. Oh yeah, we did.
We may have also eaten a brownie or two - hey, it's Amsterdam! This one was a cheesecake brownie with freeze-cried raspberries from the aforementioned Kiwi cafe. It was utterly sexy, and the only mischief was calorific.
The winding canals were spectacular and contained all sorts of humble beauty, friendly Dutch people and cat christmas tree ornaments.
Only you, Amsterdam, only you. It only took us 4 days to surrender wholeheartedly to your mischevious charms, but we are proud to say that you are a complex city with a whole lot of heart. Oh, and naughty brownies.

Did you go into any of the coffee shops? I thought it was hilarious how they had their weed "graded" on a scale - almost like when you go to a Mexican restaurant and they have their hot sauces on a wheel ranging from mild to make-your-eyes-water-hot, except in Amsterdam the scale is drug potency. ;)
ReplyDeleteWhen I went I ate a chocolate brownie that turned out to be of the naughty variety and I regretted it - not the way that you really want to see Amsterdam :(
ReplyDeleteI think the drug aspect is the only deterrent I have from going to Amsterdam... I cannot stand the smell of it! (Or the effects. I'll stick to my booze, please and thank you)
ReplyDeleteBut that brownie with the raspberries... YES PLEASE!

Please, please tell me you bought one of the cat ornaments for your Christmas tree?! x
ReplyDeleteI love the photograph with the cake and the blurry background! I would love to visit Amsterdam.
ReplyDeleteAmazing brownies! And I love the obligatory windmill pic :)
ReplyDeleteLots of love,

This also happened to my friend...it really impeded her enjoyment of the sex museum...
ReplyDeleteWow the brownie looks incredible! Glad you had such a good time. And searching quirky things to do is a great idea, I'm going to try that next holiday :)
ReplyDeleteI got so excited at the Lolly Cake pic and then I saw the cheesecake brownie. Do they deliver? To London? Within the next 20mins? I need that in my life NOW.
ReplyDeleteThis is off topic, but I REALLY REALLY REALLY like the phrase "impeded her enjoyment of the sex museum". I cannot stop giggling. It's just so serious and well put and while I'm sorry for your friend I'm so glad it happened because that sentence is immaculate x
ReplyDeleteGlad you loved it!! Such a great city!
ReplyDeleteOh the tulips are beautiful, I can't wait for my tulip bulbs to flower next spring - they are always such a welcoming sight. Also oh my - I have brownie cravings now!
ReplyDeleteSorry :D
ReplyDeleteWe had such a fab break!
ReplyDeleteIt is seriously worth a flight/trans-country train to get to.
ReplyDeleteI didn't but only because they were €29 and might scare our real cat. I did buy a pair of miniature pottery clog ornaments though!
ReplyDeleteIt was scrumptious!
ReplyDeleteYou just have to sometimes, don't you?
ReplyDeleteIf you avoid the red light district, the drug thing wouldn't really be an issue to be honest - I'd rather stick to the Cheesecake brownies too - oh my word!
ReplyDeleteIt can turn up a few interesting items, that's for sure!
